TRAINING & EMPLOYMENT

Muskaan strives to support young adults with ID and their families, in multiple and comprehensive ways. It addresses the life cycle needs of individuals with ID including varied levels of abilities. As is true with all, they need grooming in life skills, training in vocational skills, appropriate employment opportunities, and long-term safe and dignified living arrangement.  Muskaan supports families to deal with changing needs of their wards. At the core of everything that we do are the young trainees, and all our endeavors and programs are guided to fulfill their needs and aspirations, and help them lead a productive and dignified life.

Training programs at Muskaan are divided into Five major areas with clear objectives, curriculum, and assessment & evaluation systems. The details of these programs are given below:

Computer skills and enhancing conceptual learning

Sports, Yoga,
Physical Fitness, Indoor games & recreation

Life skills cognition, communication, social-emotional, dalily living

Creative self expression through varied forms of Art & craft

Holistic Development of the person

Training in vocational & work related skills

 Continuing Learning through Digital Platforms

Every project that Muskaan has taken up since 1982 was a response to the needs of people with ID and their families. We discovered that people with disability in general and ID in particular live an extremely impoverished and neglected life because society sees only their disability and not their personhood. This has resulted in lack of growth opportunities e.g. education, vocational training, employment and becoming a contributing members of the society. Muskaan took up all its projects to address these needs which are interconnected and facilitate living a life of respect and dignity:

  1. Training programs addressing holistic development including vocational training

  2. Employment services

  3. Assistive living program for senior adults with ID to provide safe and dignified living after the demise of parents

  4. Family support services

  5. Awareness & advocacy for the human rights of people with ID

Each of these projects evolved with constant experimentation and review with a focus on empowerment of persons with ID through capacity building and trust on their learning potential despite limitations in intellectual functioning.

 Continuing Learning through Digital Platforms

Pandemic situation provided Muskaan team an opportunity to develop online teaching and learning for our students as well as families. It proved to be a boon showing us ways to reach out to many more with availability of online learning and thus scaling up our efforts to reach out those who do not have access to education and training institutes which are very few as compared to the need.

A pool of Digital Learning resources has been created in the form of videos, worksheets, and Flash cards which are hosted on Digital Resource Library with its access to all teachers and families. This brought about a significant change in our online learning initiative. Similarly, Online assessment methods are created and students can be assessed for progression in learning.

Muskaan teachers have also been using virtual platforms for recreational and other fun activities for the trainees. The students can come together in large groups, perform according to their talents and share their experiences too. An interesting addition in this journey was Virtual outings to places of interest. Along with this we introduced interesting DIY (Do it Yourself) Activities at home through’ a handbook which is shared with all families.
